In 2007, Jose Bryce Smith a salon owner based in Sydney, founded O&M with a clear and powerful mission: to positively contribute to the realms of hair color and hair care and, by extension, to make a meaningful impact in the world at large. As someone who has consistently nurtured a deep passion for natural products, holistic well being, and the principles of beauty, Jose witnessed firsthand in her hair salon how harsh chemical products were adversely affecting both hairdressers and their clients. With her strong belief that hair color would inevitably evolve into a health-conscious choice, similar to food, makeup, and cleaning products, she recognized that there had to be an alternative—a better, cleaner way to approach hair care. This vision and determination ultimately led to the inception of O&M. Looking back, it was truly a revolutionary and ground-breaking idea that changed the industry. Jose pioneered a unique formulation of her own and successfully created the very first ammonia-free hair salon in Australia. In addition to this significant achievement, she also developed the first sulphate and paraben-free shampoo available in the Australian market. Since 2007, O&M has been continuously evolving into a compelling movement, genuinely listening to salon owners and meticulously creating products to suit their specific needs. The O&M community has now expanded its reach to over 15 countries, and thousands of hairdressers along with their clients are now enjoying healthier hair and overall well-being. Here are some of the “everyday” chemicals we’ve left out of their hair care and styling products:
PHTHALATES
Phthalates are compounds that cling to the hair, providing it with a pleasant fragrance while also enhancing the properties of hair products, such as gels, to offer greater staying power. However, it is important to note that exposure to phthalates in pregnant women can lead to potential harm during critical periods of a child’s development, raising concerns about their safety and long-term effects.
SULFATES
Sulfates are commonly used in various hair care products to cleanse the hair by stripping it of its natural oils, which ultimately leaves the hair feeling dry and appearing matte. In addition to this, sulfates can also denature skin proteins, which can lead to irritation and discomfort for many users. This effect is particularly pronounced in individuals who suffer from contact dermatitis, making it crucial for them to be aware of the ingredients in the products they use.
PARABENS Parabens possess antifungal and antibacterial properties that serve effectively as a preservative, helping to maintain freshness and extend the product's shelf life significantly. However, it is important to note that they are one of the leading chemicals known to potentially cause skin irritation and can lead to conditions such as contact dermatitis for some individuals.
PROPYLENE GLYCOL
Propylene Glycol is a common ingredient that is used to effectively bind many different haircare products together and help retain moisture content not only on the hair but also within the product packaging. While it serves an important purpose in the formulation, Propylene Glycol has been linked to potential side effects, including causing headaches, backaches, and even kidney problems in certain individuals. It is essential for consumers to be aware of these possible reactions.
M.I.T. - Methylisothiazolinone
Methylisothiazolinone is an effective agent that helps prevent the growth of bacteria. However, due to its high exposure to the scalp through various haircare products, this chemical can significantly damage skin cells. The resulting effects often include uncomfortable symptoms such as itching, flaking, and soreness on the scalp, leading to an overall dissatisfied experience with certain hair treatments.

To begin, I will focus on the Oway Hair products that I carry, as that is the brand I offer most frequently. I’m genuinely a big fan of this product, as it delivers impressive results. However, I just wish they would have chosen a different name for it and utilized a more distinctive packaging design. With a name like “Quick Glue,” one might expect a product with a hold so incredibly strong that you could go to bed without a worry and wake up to find your hair still in the exact same perfect position—much like the iconic Got 2 Be Glued that everyone relied on back in the 00s. Additionally, the packaging for Oway Quick Glue also bears a striking resemblance to the Got 2 Be Glued packaging, which might lead to some confusion. While the Oway Quick Glue does provide a strong hold, it also allows you to run your hands through your hair with ease, setting it apart from other products that typically call themselves glue. It is a high-hold styling putty that effectively defines, shapes, and enhances texture while imparting a sophisticated matte finish. This product provides strong and flexible control without leaving any unsightly residue, ensuring a polished yet natural look that is ideal for men's hair as well as a variety of short hair styles.It delivers exceptional high-definition hold accompanied by lasting structure, enhances natural movement and texture beautifully, and remarkably leaves no sticky residue or flaking behind.
